There was a programme on Channel 4 over the weekend about the ‘curse’ of Superman. For those that didn’t catch it, it profiled all the bad things that happened to people involved in the Superman franchise over the years. It was serious viewing (after Big Brother!) for a Saturday night.
One clip showed Christopher Reeve after his accident. We saw him on the type of exercise bike we are trying to get for Sam, a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bicycle.
Here is further information about the bike and its benefits (taken from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Centre):
‘This technology allows persons with little or no voluntary leg movement to pedal a stationary leg-cycle called an ergometer. Computer generated, low-level electrical pulses are transmitted through surface electrodes to the leg muscles; this causes coordinated contractions and the pedaling motion.’ ‘ Abundant medical literature documents the effectiveness of FES to increase muscle mass and improve cardiopulmonary function. There are studies that also link FES to a reduced frequency of pressure sores, improved bowel and bladder function and decreased incidence of urinary tract infections.’
We are almost half way to reaching our £20,000 fundraising target so that Sam can benefit from this technology. Your donation will really make a difference.
