Charitable Trusts For The United Bristol Hospitals

Posted by stuff4sam on October 18, 2006

Thank you very much here’s a box of Roses…

When we started fundraising in December 2005 we had no idea of how or where to start. Having spoken to a couple of charities we ended up chatting to Andrew Monk and Jane Thomas at Above and Beyond, a registered charity representing the Charitable Trusts of United Bristol Hospitals and specifically the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where Sam has been so well cared for.

This has meant a lot especially when we first started and only had 8 weeks to raise 3k and no clue how to go about it! As it turned out we raised 8k. Not bad going but, the important thing for us was to know that behind the scenes the funds were being looked after and channelled in the right direction.

We would also like to say a big thank you to William Booth who helped on the logistics and worked closely with Andrew to figure all this out.

Andrew, William and Jane, your help has been invaluable and without it we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Thank you!

Hi Sam from the Harleys!

Posted by stuff4sam on October 12, 2006

Hi Sam,

I am at a Harley Davidson rally in sunny Brighton. It’s an annual event for charity, this year it was in aid of the Heart Foundation. Over 1,000 Harleys took part, the sun shone bright and there was plenty of shiny chrome to be seen!

Wishing you well.

If Carlesberg made websites…

Posted by stuff4sam on October 10, 2006

…then Just Giving would be it.

We want to say a huge thank you to the award winning Just Giving, the fundraising website setup to help people like us raise money online for charity or, to put it another way, the site that has made it possible for us to raise over 10k and buy Sam a specially adapted wheel chair and an exercise bike in under 11 months.

Gone are the days of writing pledges down on a scrap of paper and chasing up payments; these guys take care of it all for you and show you where the money is going as well as ensure that you can claim back 28% gift aid on all donations (to put that into context we could claim an extra £1,593.59 on all our donations received, not bad really).

In particular we’d like to say a big thank you to Jules at Just Giving who has been at the end of an email or phone when we’ve had specific questions. Proper customer service in today’s world of the web.

Message from Sam’s Mum

Posted by stuff4sam on October 9, 2006

Sam smiling at his Mum in his high chair

This is just a quick message to say hello and thank everybody so much for everything you’ve done for Sam. I am just simply overwhelmed by all this support and kind thoughts, I cannot express my gratitude in words.

Sam is doing really well. Since the hot weather has gone he is so chatty! We wanted to publish these photos of Sam to share with people how happy he is.

With your great help, we have been able to place an order of the long-waited cycle-machine. We are going to hospital on the 18th October for the final assessment and to collect it. We simply can’t wait and can’t believe it’s finally coming true.

The stuff4sam website has been attracting lots of attention as a doctor from America who pioneers this FES cycling has seen the site and is really impressed.

All of Sam’s exercise data will be analysed by Shriners Hospital in America as well as some of the leading spinal doctors in the world – so he’s getting in training now to impress them!

Warmest regards,

Sam is laughing! He is painting while sitting in his buggey and having his lungs cleared.

Book sale – more random titles!

Posted by stuff4sam on October 6, 2006

Modern fiction and the classics are often found lurking our book sale. From Middlemarch and Jane Eyre to Memoirs of a Geisha and Stephen King’s The Green Mile, there has been a quick turnover of stock. The ones that tend to hang around are a little more random! It takes an adventurous type to sample an unusual western or a challenging sci-fi. But for 50p how can you go wrong?

Here is the blurb from the back of one random looking title: Spur – Klondike Cutie

“A boomtown full of the most ornery vermin ever to pan a river, Dawson was the perfect place for a killer to hide – until Spur McCoy arrived. Fresh from a steamboat and the steamiest women he’d ever staked a claim on, McCoy knew the chances of mining gold were very good in the Klondike, And to his delight, the prospects of golden gals were even better. With the help of the local Mounties, Spur was sure to get his man sooner or later. But when it came to getting the ladies, he would strike the mother lode quicker than a dogsled driver could yell mush!”

Any takers?!
