Happy New Year from Neil, Kazumi and Sam

Posted by stuff4sam on December 30, 2006

Dear all,

We hope you all had lovely Christmas.

We had a wonderful Christmas here with our little Sam. Thinking about last year, this is just like a dream. Last Christmas Sam was still an in-patient at Bristol Children’s hospital and was only allowed to come home for two days.

Now he is home and so healthy, thanks to all your help. He now does cycling every other day with an average of 3 miles per session!! We can gradually feel his little muscles coming back around his thighs, just as they should be.

Just before Christmas we received the mobile arm extensions, which was simply great! When he stands, we can use this new equipment to help his arm movement. His shoulder movements are getting stronger and stronger. With his arms resting on the arm extensions, Sam can shrug his shoulders and because the arm extension are so delicate and they look like they are ‘floating’ by his side, Sam can move his hands up and down slightly which means with these arm extensions he can see his arms moving. We are attaching a little airbrush to these extensions which blows paint onto a canvas, so he can actually paint! This is simply overwhelming for us as this is the only way that he has physically been able to create something since the accident.

This may not seem like much, but when you see Sam so immobile, just like a little statue, to see any movement is magnified 1000 times for us! We will paint a picture and show you all on the website!

All these pieces of equipments you’ve help get for Sam in 2006 have helped so much to keep Sam healthy and to strenghten his movement. The chair gives us the freedom to go pretty much anywhere and it is a real workhorse, allowing us to go in our car, going on beaches, through woods and trailing muddy tacks through the house. The FES bike gives Sam immeasurable benefit to his health and fitness, and Sam now loves anything to do with bikes or two wheels as it is something he can do himself. The arm extensions will strengthen his little shoulders and give him the opportunity to build up his muscles and be creative.

How can we thank you enough for your help…we can only show you pictures of Sam happy and smiling as he ususally is, and a beautiful, cheeky little boy.

We will post you with new photos of sam with his arm extensions very soon.

We firmly believe that one day Sam will walk again, and with your help we look forward to lots more progress for Sam in the year ahead.

We wish you all a very happy and healthy new year.

Neil, Kazumi and Sam

Ideas for unwanted presents

Posted by stuff4sam on December 29, 2006

Let’s be realistic, you may well have received some slightly less than exciting presents this Christmas. We know that the festive season isn’t all about presents, that you don’t give to receive and that there is more to life than bath salts. But what do you do with the fluffy purple cushions that really don’t fit with your minimalist apartment or the body lotion that smells of Cherry Tunes?

We have a solution – organise an unwanted presents sale in your school, office or church! Encourage people to bring in the items that don’t really work for them and then sell them to people who do like that kind of thing!

Last year our office sales raised over £1500 for Sam. So don’t just chuck away Cousin Frank’s thoughtful gift of an talking coffee maker or those wacky socks with toes, someone might want them!

A big thank you

Posted by stuff4sam on December 28, 2006

A big thank you to Paul, Cindy, Christina, Amanda, Latisha, Tanya and Peter Stockting who have raised a massive £5,000!

This is a huge amount that, when added to the total raised so far takes us over the £20k mark!

After a bit of tinkering under the bonnet we now have a translation tool to the site so it can be read in Japanese. We’re not sure about how good the translation is but hope it’s enough to get some sense out of.
The “Japanese” link that translates the site can be found on the bottom right of the page.
Any other language can be added so let us know either by posting a comment or emailing us if you want us to add anything.

Totaliser set at £16,000

In true Blue Peter stylee here is our very own Stuff4Sam totaliser! It shows progress so far and how close we are to our self-set goal of £20,000. We are anticipating that we should reach this figure some time in the first half of 2007 but don’t plan to stop there. Sam will need stuff and we will keep on raising money to buy it!

With your wonderful help we have now reached the £16,000 mark! A very happy point to reach before Christmas.

You can now make a donation via PayPal using the button on the left. If you have any problem processing your donation, please email stuff4sam@gmail.co.uk and we’ll do our best to sort things out.

Alternatively you can send cheques made payable to ‘stuff4sam’ to:

Thanks again to all who donated, sponsored and did stuff this year. You’ve be great!

Sam and his magnificent cycling machine!

Posted by stuff4sam on December 19, 2006

Check out this video of Sam on his FES exercise bike (new window) clocking up more miles than all of the Stuff4sam team put together – 3 miles no less!

The bike moves itself and Sam’s legs with it which in turn boosts his overall general health as well as keep him entertained. In fact his Dad said that before Sam had his bike fighting off a cold was long and difficult, possibly meaning hospitalisation, but now he is building up his own resistance he has been able to fight off a cold in only a matter of days.

The bike is linked up to a hospital database over in the States where his progress is monitored and exercise plans are worked out for him (impressive for a personal trainer!). This means he is never over worked and crucial data can be mined to determine his level of improvement and monitor his stimulation.

It’s widely believed that using a bike to stimulate can give hope to restoring some movement. Christopher Reeve used a FES bike and regained a bit of movement in his little fingers after he started training.

Any time soon Sam should also be recieving some arm extensions so that when he isn’t training he can keep busy painting and playing. None of this would have happened without your support and we can’t thank you enough. Hopefully next year we’ll be able to get him some new equipment to use as well.

One year on…

Posted by stuff4sam on December 15, 2006

It’s been a whole year since we started raising money for Sam. At the start we set ourselves the nail biting target of £3k. We could never have imagined that we would be at almost £16k 12 months later!

Within an afternoon of the first email going out, asking for sponsorship of Henny’s dog sledding, £1k had been raised. And that was just from colleagues. Within a week £3k had been exceeded.

The unwanted Christmas present sales in London and Birmingham, a raffle and office swear box all tipped the total to £8k by the end on January 2006. Not bad for six weeks work!

Other events and activities followed including Hugh’s bike ride in July, Debbie and Jane’s 5k in September, Arlo’s 1 mile sponsored walk, book boxes in London and Peterborough, cake and scarf sales in Peterborough, the Christmas craft fair and of course the party. There have been generous donations coming from far and wide including the PIC team who have each donated their office birthday collections to the fund, raising about £500 over the year.

So many people have pulled out the stops to make this happen and without exception everyone has said “Oh, it was nothing”. But it has meant everything.

Especially big thank you’s go to:

Thank you all.

Thank you from Sam (and his mum and dad)!

Posted by stuff4sam on December 11, 2006

Thank you very much for organising such a great party and craft fair for Sam. We are forever amazed by people’s kind support and care for Sam. The night sounds such great fun – 60 people is simply fantastic!

Sam’s been doing really well, he enjoys his bike so much and now he says ‘Well done! Sammy’ after his cycling session! His speech is also getting greater and greater, and he loves singing. We wonder where he got this singing talent from!

We have ordered the mobile arm support, which should be arriving in a week. This will help Sam’s shoulder movement greatly and help him to do painting or to knock down few toys off the stall! Thank you very much for making this possible again.

Despite all his difficulties, he enjoys his life so much. He tells us how beatiful life is. He is so lucky to have so many people to care for him.

Lots of love and big hug from Sam.
Big thank you from his mum and dad

£13k, £14k, £15k!

Posted by stuff4sam on December 8, 2006

What with all the excitement of the craft fair and party we forgot to mention that we hit big targets!

Over £3000 was raised in those two days, taking us well over the £15,000 mark! We’ve been thinking that we need a Blue Peter style totaliser so that we can erupt silver paper when we get to our psychological target of £20,000.

Its worth mentioning here that we’re not planning on stopping when we get to £20k, it just sounded like a really big number when we started all this back in December 2005!
