One year on…

Posted by stuff4sam on December 15, 2006

It’s been a whole year since we started raising money for Sam. At the start we set ourselves the nail biting target of £3k. We could never have imagined that we would be at almost £16k 12 months later!

Within an afternoon of the first email going out, asking for sponsorship of Henny’s dog sledding, £1k had been raised. And that was just from colleagues. Within a week £3k had been exceeded.

The unwanted Christmas present sales in London and Birmingham, a raffle and office swear box all tipped the total to £8k by the end on January 2006. Not bad for six weeks work!

Other events and activities followed including Hugh’s bike ride in July, Debbie and Jane’s 5k in September, Arlo’s 1 mile sponsored walk, book boxes in London and Peterborough, cake and scarf sales in Peterborough, the Christmas craft fair and of course the party. There have been generous donations coming from far and wide including the PIC team who have each donated their office birthday collections to the fund, raising about £500 over the year.

So many people have pulled out the stops to make this happen and without exception everyone has said “Oh, it was nothing”. But it has meant everything.

Especially big thank you’s go to:

Thank you all.

Big thanks!

Last week we received a cheque for £200 from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. We don’t want to make a big thing out of it, but thank you!

Charitable Trusts For The United Bristol Hospitals

Posted by stuff4sam on October 18, 2006

Thank you very much here’s a box of Roses…

When we started fundraising in December 2005 we had no idea of how or where to start. Having spoken to a couple of charities we ended up chatting to Andrew Monk and Jane Thomas at Above and Beyond, a registered charity representing the Charitable Trusts of United Bristol Hospitals and specifically the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where Sam has been so well cared for.

This has meant a lot especially when we first started and only had 8 weeks to raise 3k and no clue how to go about it! As it turned out we raised 8k. Not bad going but, the important thing for us was to know that behind the scenes the funds were being looked after and channelled in the right direction.

We would also like to say a big thank you to William Booth who helped on the logistics and worked closely with Andrew to figure all this out.

Andrew, William and Jane, your help has been invaluable and without it we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Thank you!

If Carlesberg made websites…

Posted by stuff4sam on October 10, 2006

…then Just Giving would be it.

We want to say a huge thank you to the award winning Just Giving, the fundraising website setup to help people like us raise money online for charity or, to put it another way, the site that has made it possible for us to raise over 10k and buy Sam a specially adapted wheel chair and an exercise bike in under 11 months.

Gone are the days of writing pledges down on a scrap of paper and chasing up payments; these guys take care of it all for you and show you where the money is going as well as ensure that you can claim back 28% gift aid on all donations (to put that into context we could claim an extra £1,593.59 on all our donations received, not bad really).

In particular we’d like to say a big thank you to Jules at Just Giving who has been at the end of an email or phone when we’ve had specific questions. Proper customer service in today’s world of the web.

Many thanks to Jenny Esse!

Brightly coloured costume and mask

Many thanks to Jenny Esse L.R.P.S (that’s the kind of funny name you get when you start doing stuff with cameras apparantly) who has donated a batch of cards she made out of photos taken in Vietnam, Venice and Tuscany. We’re selling these along with the books4sam which so far has raised over £500!

The shot above of the masked man was taken at the Carnival in Venice. The other image was taken in Hanoi, Vietnam and is of three girls in traditional Vietnnamese dresses called Ao Dai’s riding their bikes.

Jenny travels all over the world so who knows, we may see a “Hi Sam!” picture next…

Thank you!

Thank you to Barbara Shephard and Pam Goodliffe!

Posted by stuff4sam on August 10, 2006

Big thank you to Barbara Shephard who has been making home made cards and present bags to add to the book sale. The cards include birthday, new baby and wedding cards and are also available in tactile and popup versions. It’s hardly surprising that they’ve been going like hot cakes!
Thank you very much!
